Traffic isn't the same during Monday morning rush hour as it is on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Heavy traffic, rotaries, traffic lights, and even pedestrians can slow you down. TomTom Advanced Lane Guidance gives you extra clarity when navigating difficult junctions by showing you which lane to take, so you won't miss your turn or have to make sudden, dangerous lane crossings. Photorealistic images and a pulsing green arrow indicate exactly which lane to use, so you can go confidently.

Spoken Street Names
Announces turn-by-turn directions aloud, including street and place names.

5-Inch Touchscreen
Expand your horizons with a 5-inch extra-wide touchscreen. A widescreen allows an expanded driving view and easier menu operation.

Fold and Go EasyPort Mount
The award-winning Fold and Go EasyPort mount provides maximum portability. It folds neatly onto the back of the device, so both are small enough to fit into your pocket or bag, and makes your device even more portable so you can take it with you wherever you travel.

Summary: TomTom XXL 540TM World Traveler - good gps
Comment:
I used it for about 3 weeks and took it with us to GA. Most of the time the direction is good, once or twice it chose a longer route for no good reason. The reroute time is fast. I don't
have any problem setting up and updating the lifetime map and it took about an hour to download.
In general, I am happy with this gps, it is much better than my old MIO. The time to get the
satellite signal is fast, the life traffic is good to have. However, the free lifetime map does not cover Europe. The one bad thing is the mount, it does not stay on the dashboard.

Summary: False Description, needs changing
Comment:
Nothing wrong with the Tomtom but should be made clear that the Lifetime map updates offer does not apply to the European map on the device, only the USA/Canada/Mexico maps.

Summary: Great GPS
Comment:
Love my TomTom. This model is a geat improvement over the TomTom XL, the larger screen is nice and the lane guidance makes driving on freeways in unfamiliar places much easier. Voice directions are clear and precise. The one thing I don't much care for on this unit is the mounting system. The integrated mount which comes with the unit is next to worthless, so if you buy one, get an aftermarket mount at the same time.

Also recommend buying a refurbed unit. MUCH less expensive, and works as good as a new one.

Summary: Lifetime maps, but no room in GPS to store them!
Comment:
This is a device for the person who likes to get into the insides of the system ( I believe its called hacking). For such a person, the device is great. I would not recommend it for a novice. Here's why:

1. The text to voice pronunciation is terrible. The words run together, for example, 'San Jose' is pronounced sanozay, San Francisco sounds like 'sunfrinCISco'. Now, the interesting bit is that this issue can easily be fixed by someone who can hack into the system and make a few small tweaks. I wonder why TomTom cannot just do is in the devices they ship out, or as a software update to those already sold.

2. This device - 540 World Traveler Edition - is pitched as having complete US, Canada, Mexico and Europe maps. Truth is, this GPS does not have room for the newest versions of these maps. You can have all of North America, but not all Europe, only bits of it. For example, you can have Western Europe, but then you cannot have southern Europe - because there is not room on the device to accommodate that particular map. Same thing for Eastern or Central Europe.

This would not be such a big deal if you could be selective about which N. AM. country maps you needed, so you could leave out Canada, or Mexico or US, and make room for all of Europe. But you cannot do that.

3. The worst thing is that it takes ages to upload maps, or swap out between the regionsl European paps. We are talking hours.

If I were to travel to Europe, I would therefore have to lug along my laptop and flip maps back and forth every time I wanted to go from, say, the UK to Italy, or from Sweden to the Czech Republic. And wait around for a few hours while the GPS sat around uploading the right map. I think that if TomTom does not fix the map problem within a reasonable time, I will probably send it back, since the device does not function as advertised.

Having said all that, once you hack it and set it up properly, it works well (except for the map problem).

Summary: Gets you most of the way to where you're going, but...
Comment:
For the most part, the TomTom XXL 540TM has served us well. In general, it has been very good at plotting reasonable routes to where we've needed to go, and adapting to situations where we've elected to use an alternate route.

However, the ability of this unit to locate a specific address leaves much to be desired. The destination point for the address to our house, for example, is plotted well within our back yard. More significantly, in most other cases the TomTom has directed us substantially beyond the entry point to the parking lot for our destination address.

Another area of concern is with highway divides in the middle of a long travel segment. On at least one occasion, the TomTom has failed to provide warning to bear left in the case where one highway split in two. It should be noted that this has only occurred when we were in the middle of a 40 mile segment of our trip. When the need to change roads came more frequently (i.e., within 3 miles), the TomTom handled highway divides well.

As others have noted, this unit is prone to becoming easily dislodged or coming apart when handled. It is hard to tell which problem is worse for the unit as-provided -- the suction cup on the mount, or the weak metal clips holding the GPS to the mount. A bit of velcro applied to the suction cup and a wider dashboard mount has solved the issue of getting the mount to stay on the dashboard. I am not sure if velcro or a double sided adhesive is also in order for having the GPS unit stay on its mount.

Establishing our account for the lifetime updates was easy. The first update took unexpectedly long -- nearly an hour to download the changes from the web to our computer, then approximately double that time to push the changes from our computer to the TomTom. On the plus side, subsequent updates have been much quicker. Also on the plus side, even though we lost our network connection in the middle of the first download, the TomTom update tool was able to resume downloading where it left off rather than having to start over again.

In summary, the TomTom XXL 540TM is a driving aid that we're glad to have, but there are still some significant weak points to the product.
