Best GPS I have ever owned.

Comment:
I had been looking for a GPS to replace my previous unit which was stolen from my car. It was a Harman Kardin and it worked well but support was seriously lacking if you had an issue. As much as I liked it I was looking for something with more features and better backing from the company that made it. I wanted bluetooth and traffic updates. I have had other GPSs in the past and was using the GPS on my phone for the last year which was less than desirable with text messages, e-mails, and phone calls coming in all of the time. I decided on the TomTom 740 Live because it had all of the features I wanted and more. It was also one of the least expensive. I didn't say cheapest because I believe it has very sturdy construction and it is clear much thought has gone into not only the hardware design but the software and interface as well. I have had the unit for about 2 weeks now and couldn't be happier. Best GPS I have ever owned.

Smart phone will not link up to Tom Tom GPS units
|
Comment:
The Tom Tom-740 seems to be one of the top of the line GPS units. the trouble that I had the first day was my phone would not link to the GPS. I called the help line they said oh you have a smart phone that will not link up with our unit. I asked where is that on the box or in the box.The help person said welllll you have to go to the web site to find that that info out about smart phones not linking up.So I hope if you plan on getting a Tom Tom you will not do so if you have a smart phone.

Comment:
I ordered the 740 because I have a TomTom one and in general like the maps and the way it worked, although there were some feature that were annoying.
The 740 worked as it should out of the box and it look as if it was new.
The maps and navigation on the 740 worked well (and were much better than my old TomTom), but the blue tooth did not work with my specific phone.
Also the voice input feature was really not usable.
I talked to the TomTom customer service folks and they were very responsive and helpful, however at the end of the day , I returned the unit and got a XL 335 TM, which was a little cheaper and has life time maps and traffic.
The return process with Amazon was very user friendly and efficient.
In sum probably a good product for some folks but not me.

Comment:
Good: The screen is a good size and bright. The voice is more than adequate. The phone and phone book are very easy to setup and work wonderfully. Battery life is good. The Google search feature and its integration with the gps is fantastic (ex: we were driving from LA to SF on the 101 and saw our favorite coffee shop in Pismo Beach. By the time we go to the off the freeway we were way past the coffee shop and couldn't find it. We used the google search, found the location, and just hit "go to" and the device directed us straight there - very easy)
Bad: The touchscreen was a little difficult to get use to at first. Wish it was easier to move the map in different direction. The menus are a little confusing and take sometime to get used.

Much better than a comparably priced Garmin

I've had the TomTom for a week and I'm very happy with it. It's got lots of great features and gives good directions. The traffic feature works well. Gas prices are easy to access. All of my complaints are minor -- I would call them more suggestions than complaints. Locks onto signal quickly. I am happy that I ordered this item.
